The Economics Department at Nazarbayev University (NU) is one of the fastest growing departments in the world. Currently, there are 16 faculty members, approximately 220 undergraduate majors and 30 MA students. The department offers comprehensive coverage of the major economics fields and hosts internal and external seminars.
The faculty consists of researchers working in various fields linked to economic theory, applied economics, and macroeconomics. The faculty has published in the top general-interest and field journals including the American Economic Review, the Review of Economic Studies, the Review of Economics and Statistics, International Economic Review, Journal of International Economics, Journal of Economic Theory, and Games and Economic Behavior, among other outlets.
The Economics Department has successfully placed its students into M.A. and Ph.D. programs in Economics and related fields. Among them, in 2017: MIT-Sloan, NYU, UW Madison, Columbia, UW Seattle, Duke, UCL, Leuven. 8 of 24 NU students who got awarded with the Bolashak Scholarship last year were from the Economics Department.
The department is in partnership with the Department of Economics at University of Wisconsin, Madison (UWM). Among the advantages of the partnership is the possibility for the faculty to take fully funded trips to UWM, organize joint conferences and being mentored by a member of the Economics Department at UWM. Members of the Economics Department at UWM are also external advisors for the recruiting process.
