The Economics Department at Nazarbayev University (NU) is a young but dynamic and fast-growing department. In recent years, several new faculty members with degrees from leading North American and European universities have joined the department. Also, several of our faculty members have previously been faculty members in prominent universities including Columbia University, University of British Columbia, and University of Southampton. We also have regular visiting faculty members from leading universities such as Bocconi, CORE, and Queen Mary.
The faculty consists of researchers working in various fields in economic theory, applied economics, and macroeconomics. The faculty has published in the top general-interest and field journals, including the American Economic Review, the Review of Economic Studies, the Review of Economics and Statistics, International Economic Review, Journal of International Economics, Journal of Economic Theory, and Games and Economic Behavior. We also host several internal and external seminars throughout the year.
The department offers both bachelor’s and master’s degrees, with curricula that cover most major fields in economics. The Economics Department has successfully placed its students into master’s and Ph.D. programs, including MIT-Sloan, NYU, UW Madison, Columbia, UW Seattle, Duke, UCL, and Leuven. Many of the NU students who are awarded the prestigious Bolashak Scholarship turn out to be from the Economics Department.
The department is in partnership with the Department of Economics at University of Wisconsin, Madison (UWM). Among the advantages of the partnership is the possibility for the faculty to visit UWM with full funding, organize joint conferences and being mentored by members of the Economics Department at UWM.
